Issues Treated With Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional therapy addresses a variety of orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), which are patterns of muscle dysfunction involving the tongue, lips, jaw, and face.

Myofunctional therapy focuses on retraining these muscles to work in harmony, improving breathing, chewing, swallowing, and overall oral health and development.

Incorrect Resting Tongue Posture

When the tongue rests low in the mouth instead of gently against the palate, affecting jaw growth, breathing, and swallowing.

Clenching, Grinding, or TMJ Issues

Related to improper oral muscle function and resting posture.

Speech Concerns Linked to Oral Function

While my-functional therapists do not treat articulation directly like a speech-language pathologist, they address the muscle function issues that can contribute to speech difficulties.

Preparation and Rehabilitation for Frenectomy (Tongue or Lip Tie Release)

Optimizing muscle function before and after release procedures to achieve the best outcomes.

Mouth Breathing

Breathing through the mouth instead of the nose, which can impact facial development, sleep quality, and oral health.

Tongue Thrust

A swallowing pattern where the tongue pushes forward against or between the teeth, contributing to bite problems and orthodontic relapse.

Low Muscle Tone or Poor Oral Muscle Coordination

Weakness or uncoordinated movement in the tongue, lips, or cheeks affecting speech, feeding, and swallowing.

Habits Impacting Oral Structure

Such as prolonged thumb sucking, pacifier use, or other oral habits that influence bite and jaw development.

Hi, I’m Shelbie

I’m a Registered Dental Hygienist with over 10 years of experience in the dental field. Throughout my career, I’ve noticed a pattern in my patients – jaw pain, clenching and grinding, mouth breathing, and other symptoms that traditional dental care alone couldn’t fully resolve. I knew there had to be more we could do to truly help them.

My search for answers became even more personal when I started seeing these same symptoms in my own children and family members. That’s when I discovered the power of Myofunctional Therapy.

Now, as a Myofunctional Therapist, I am passionate about addressing the root causes behind these issues – from improper oral habits and muscle function to airway health. I believe early intervention during childhood growth can make a profound difference, preventing these challenges from persisting into adulthood.
